Karen O, who is better known as the lead vocalist of New York band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, has shared the first track of her forthcoming debut solo album ‘Crush Songs’ which will be released on 9th September via The Stroke’s Julian Casablancas’ label, Cult Records.
‘Rapt’ came with a rather vibrant and dreamy music video which was directed by Karen’s husband Barney Clay (who has directed a number of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ music videos).
In a note on her official website, Karen says: ‘When I was 27 I crushed a lot. I wasn’t sure I’d ever fall in love again. These songs were written and recorded in private around this time. They are the soundtrack to what was an ever continuing love crusade. I hope they keep you company on yours.’
Julian Casablancas has called The Crush songs a ‘classic’, adding: ‘I just wanna listen to it all day. Karen is an all-time great.’
Featuring material, including home recordings, made back in 2006 and 2007, the record will also include Karen’s “own personal drawings, handwritten lyric and more” which you can already find on her website.
Earlier this year Karen was nominated for an Academy Award. ‘The Moon Song’ which appeared on the OST for Spike Jonze’s ‘Her’ was nominated in the Original Song category. You can listen to Karen O’s ‘The Moon Song’ here.
